The Pooka and The Mermaid were solo guitar instrumentals written in Dublin in 1983. Brad Hurley and I played an early version of The Mermaid in the band Above The Timberline in the 80s.

During a recording session with Ockham's Razor in 1997, Brad and I were blessed with a wonderful thunderstorm (which can be heard prominently on the tune we were tracking), which prompted me to write Stallion and Mare almost on the spot.

This arrangement of the tunes has been kicking around for a couple of decades and I'm glad to finally get it down on tape (so to speak).

lyrics

Stallion and Mare
A clap of thunder shakes awake
Idle thoughts and restless dreams
Expectation bears its fruit
And a quiet voice says, “I am free”

Early in the afternoon
Light had shone and gave its rays
Making offers of contentment
At the altar of the day

But in the evening power comes
There is a change now in the air
Stop and look and stare above
To see the stallion and the mare

Pre Chorus:
Storm now build,
Consume the twilight
Wind now try to gather speed
Move so swiftly
Past the land
Sky now open-sky now bleed

Chorus:
Lightning flash cut the heat
Sheets of rain flood the ground
Stand down here at the world’s feet
Draw breath deep-hear the sound
Lightning flash cut the night
For a second all can be seen
Flexing muscles of pure might
It has shaken free

Run like a rabbit, fly like a hawk
The dirt shall surely drink its fill
Water comes to bring rebirth
To the rivers, valleys and the hills

Pre Chorus
Chorus

The violent fire will fade away
The air shall soon be freshening
Until the power can rise again
And a quiet voice says, “I am free”

Pre Chorus
Chorus
